Yoshitomo Nara

Yoshitomo Nara's art, characterized by its seemingly simplistic style in paintings, sculptures, and drawings, draws inspiration from pop culture icons like manga, Walt Disney cartoons, and punk rock aesthetics. His creations feature both endearing and unsettling child characters, often set against flat backgrounds with bold lines and vibrant colours. Nara explores themes of imagination and individuality, with his more intricate works delving into the relationship between figure and ground. Nara earned his MFA from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music and has exhibited widely in major cities such as Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and others. His artworks are part of prestigious collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Rubell Collection, the Museum of Modern Art, the Long Museum, and the Aomori Museum of Art. Notably, Nara's paintings have commanded significant prices in the secondary art market, reaching seven figures.

About the artist

Yoshitomo Nara, arguably Japan’s most renowned living artist, creates art that is instantly recognisable for its iconic yet deceptively simple style. Drawing inspiration from cartoons, music, and personal experiences, Nara's paintings, sculptures, and drawings prominently feature children as subjects. These figures, at times melancholic or eerie, have garnered a cult-like global following and significant market value.

Who is Yoshitomo Nara?

Born and raised in northern Japan, Yoshitomo Nara's upbringing was marked by a sense of solitude, finding solace in music and animals. Following his art education in Japan, Nara ventured to Germany in 1988, where he immersed himself in Neo-Expressionism and punk rock, deeply influencing his artistic direction. After twelve years abroad, Nara returned to Japan, where he gained prominence as a pivotal figure in the country's 1990s Pop Art movement. His early works, characterised by their simplicity and depiction of cartoon-like characters, quickly garnered attention and acclaim.
