Jana Schröder’s ‘M.I.G.H.T.’ at Skarstedt Gallery London

Skarstedt Gallery in London recently hosted "M.I.G.H.T.," an exhibition by German artist Jana Schröder, which ran from 21 November 2024 to 1 February 2025. Marking Schröder's second solo exhibition with Skarstedt and her London debut, the show captivated audiences with its dynamic exploration of neurological communication, digital media, and contemporary abstraction.

Jana Schröder: Artistic Background and Influences

Born in 1983 in Brillon, Germany, Jana Schröder developed her artistic practice at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, where she studied under the renowned painter Albert Oehlen. Her work is characterised by expressive gestures, vivid colour palettes, and fluid compositions that explore the emotional and physical properties of paint. Influenced by abstraction, neuroscience, and digital culture, Schröder’s paintings blur the boundaries between spontaneity and control, inviting viewers to engage in a meditative visual experience.

Reflecting on "M.I.G.H.T." at Skarstedt Gallery

The exhibition "M.I.G.H.T.," which stands for Metamorphosis in Generative Human Thinking, examined the tension between digital media and human cognition. Schröder explored how the constant flow of information in the digital age impacts perception and understanding. Her paintings in this exhibition reflected the overwhelming nature of contemporary media consumption, translating this experience into layered, abstract compositions.

The exhibition featured three distinct series: "Synaclips," "Frontracks Synaclips Spe," and "Cortexophis."

"Synaclips" combined the words 'synapse' and 'clips,' presenting black and white paintings that evoked neurological connections and the fragmented nature of digital information.

"Cortexophis" merged 'cortex' (the brain's outer layer) with 'Ophidia' (snakes), incorporating reptilian imagery to symbolise transformation and the evolution of consciousness.

"Frontracks Synaclips Spe" combined elements from "Synaclips" with German terms such as 'Frondienst' (forced labour) and 'Rakel' (squeegee), addressing the challenge of authenticity in artistic expression and the mechanisation of creativity.

Schröder’s use of bold colours, fluid forms, and rhythmic compositions created a sense of movement and energy, drawing viewers into an immersive visual and intellectual experience.

Skarstedt Gallery: A Leading Space for Contemporary Art

Skarstedt Gallery, founded in 1994, operates internationally with locations in New York, Paris, and London. The London space, situated at 8 Bennet Street in St James's, has been a key venue for contemporary exhibitions, showcasing significant artists who explore themes of identity, representation, and abstraction. "M.I.G.H.T." continued the gallery's tradition of presenting thought-provoking contemporary art that engages with the complexities of modern life.

A Landmark Exhibition in London’s Art Scene

Now that "M.I.G.H.T." has concluded, its impact remains significant in London's contemporary art landscape. The exhibition not only showcased Jana Schröder's innovative approach to painting but also prompted reflection on the intersection between digital media, cognitive processes, and artistic practice. As Schröder continues to push the boundaries of abstraction, her work remains a testament to the power of painting in an increasingly digital world.
